Abstract：In the middle of the 19th century, Hankou became the most important commercial city in the late Chinese imperial system. The dislocation of economic functions and administrative levels in Hankou created opportunities for exploring local governance. This article takes the construction of the city wall in Hankou in 1864 as a key historical section, and analyzes the source of the city wall’s form, construction process, and spatial naming system. It believes that the construction of the city wall in Hankou was a typical event of local governance in the late Qing Dynasty, and based on this, it explores the local practice and spatial strategy of the traditional concept of governance.
