Abstract:The connections between cities have become increasingly frequent and dense, but it may also bring regional risks. Taking Wuhan metropolitan area as an example, this paper attempts to interpret the correlation between the characteristics of intercity migration network and the spreading of COVID-19 epidemic from the perspective of risk control. It finds that there is a high correlation between the position of cities in the network and risks; a risk can trigger the “cascade effect” in the network; there are much larger chances of systematic risks in the mono-center city regions; and reasonable substructures can enhance the resilience of city networks. Therefore, this paper argues that it is meaningful and relatively safe to pursue the connectivity between cities only under the premise of optimizing regional network structure. We should be alert to the cross-city risks, guide the regional city network structural optimization through spatial planning, and establish a regional collaborative governance network.
