Abstract:Located on the main north-south axis of the Luojia Mountain of Wuhan University, the College of Engineering is one of the early buildings of the campus. Originally the building was the place of teaching, research, and office work for the College of Engineering. Afterwards it was entirely used as offices, with the main hall for University administration and the satellite halls for various departments. It consists of a main and four satellite halls, a corridor, and a tower. The central atrium of the main hall, with its glazing under a steel roof, has been widely recognized as one of the most distinctive architectural features of the campus. The College of Engineering occupies an important position in the history of modern architecture of China, and reflects the integration of architectural culture of the East and the West and advanced building technology. This article sorts out the course of the construction of the College of Engineering, analyses its design concept, tries to fully restore the understanding of the designer of the architectural art, construction technology and regional characteristics, deeply excavates the preservation value of the College of Engineering, and reflects the characteristics of the times and important historical status of the College of Engineering in the history of modern Chinese architecture.
