Abstract：Urban agglomeration is now the key spatial embodiment of “New Urbanization” in China. Yet, in different socio-economic and geographical contexts, existent
urban agglomerations in China are experiencing different development stages. Therefore,an accurate assessment of the development stage of a certain urban agglomeration is the scientific foundation of relevant plan formulation and implementation for it. Taking Wuhan city circle as an example, this paper evaluates its development stage by a new matrix assessment model, with the conclusion that Wuhan city circle is now at the speedy development stage. Through social network analysis using data of courier dispatch points and runs of passenger coaches, it is found that its spatial development directions tend to be Wuhan-Huangshi,Wuhan-Xianning and Wuhan-Xiantao, while there is no clear evidence showing the potential in other directions.
