Abstract:The decades of the 1920s-1930s saw a major effort to remake Hankou. The thrusts of reformist efforts included remaking the urban spatial regime, and sprucing up the city. This paper focuses on Hankou’s Riverfront Avenue, the first and most influential project in Hankou’s urban reconstruction movement. It elucidates the urban planning and design ideas and implementation process. Based on empirical and theoretical thinking, the study carries out micro-scaled, routinized and diversified investigations. It reveals the conflicts and negotiations among modern municipal knowledge, imperialist privilege and feudal traditions. The research intends to provide some insights about urban space in modern China.
