Abstract:Research on modern Chinese architecture generally requires a comprehensive awareness of space and time perspective—a comprehensive observation based on the intersection of global interaction and specific circumstances. Here, “specific circumstances”refer to a multidimensional, multi-directional, and multi-level understanding of core components such as specific time, specific spaces, specific subjects, and specific mechanisms within the process of modernization under the background of global interactions. Its essence is a series of problems, concepts, systems, and mechanisms that emerge when an ancient civilization of vast scale and millennia-long history encounters exogenously driven modernization. Therefore the core proposition of this research field is to capture the immense tension between integration and diversities, and to reveal its essence. It suggests that we should re-examine research on modern Chinese architecture against the background outlined above, in order to more comprehensively approach the historical truth.
