Abstract:Based on the study of the tradition of measured drawing of historic buildings in the West and its impact on architectural design, education and preservation, this paper investigates the background of the establishment of architectural measuring as part of curriculum at the Department of Architecture, Tsinghua University in the early 1950s. It focuses on the four historical periods of measuring and drawing modern Chinese architecture, and elaborates on the relationship between measured drawings and the research on modern Chinese architectural history. It ends with the predictive development of combination of new measuring technologies with traditional methods.
