Abstract:In recent years, the course “Ancient Architecture Surveying and Mapping” has gradually shifted towards the surveying and mapping of settlements and vernacular architecture, and the course content and outcome requirements have become increasingly diverse. This paper first explores the significance of the theoretical exploration contained in this transformation, that is, the surveying and mapping under the guidance of architectural typology aims to achieve the integration of multiple dimensions such as architecture, emotion, society and politics. Secondly, due to the fact that traditional Chinese settlements and their traditional diagrams can well integrate landscape types, architectural types and ritual types, they have received attention in surveying, mapping and theoretical research, and have become an important connection between cultural tradition and design operations. Thirdly, although the traditional Chinese spatial view and its diagrams have significant advantages, there are still deficiencies that need to be developed and improved in contemporary design practice. Finally, this paper emphasizes that the “Ancient Architecture Surveying and Mapping” course with settlements surveying should have theoretical awareness and systematically optimize the course goals and contents, course cluster organization, course design and outcome expression.
