Abstract:The sign system is of great significance for wayfinding in subway interchange stations. However, quantitative research in this field remains limited, and guidance for project design and evaluation is relatively insufficient. This paper explores the relationship between sign density and wayfinding efficiency in subway interchange stations through field research conducted at Shanghai Century Avenue Station. Statistical analysis shows that the sign density has a significant correlation with the excessive walking ratio of passengers in the process of wayfinding, and the quantitative relationship between them is in the form of a Power function. Sign density also has a significant impact on passengers’evaluations of the complexity of the station layout, satisfaction with station signage, and psychological experiences during wayfinding. Based on the regression equations between indicators, two methods for evaluating sign density in subway interchange stations are proposed. The former establishes sign density standards applicable to most wayfinding routes, while the latter addresses special wayfinding routes with long distances.
