Abstract:During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Yellow River Basin was plagued by frequent wars, and the construction of fortresses was an important form of settlement and architecture for local residents to seek safety and self-protection. As a typical area in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, the Guanzhong region is characterized by an extensive distribution and remains of fort-type settlements, which hold important research value. Based on the analysis of historical data and geographic information data, this paper explores the distribution characteristics and driving factors of fort-type settlements in Guanzhong area. Furthermore, based on the terrain feature, the fort-type settlements are categorized into plain and plateau-border types. With graphical methods, the study reveals the spatial pattern characteristics of fort-type settlements influenced by the terrain. The results indicate that fort-type settlements in the Guanzhong area exhibit clustered distribution patterns. Specifically, plain-type settlements demonstrate features of self-adaptability, while plateau-border settlements show a greater degree of environmental adaptability.
