Abstract：In response to the discussions on establishing a theoretical system for Chinese architecture, this paper reviews the dilemmas and skepticism that architectural theory encountered in Europe and America after World War II, along with the reasons behind these challenges. It elaborates on the two major approaches to constructing architectural theory—the inward tendency to architecture itself and the extending social/philosophical tendency, highlighting their characteristics and related issues. The article also examines the problems of power and effectiveness within architectural theory. Using these examinations as a reference, it analyses the difficulties faced by architectural theory in China and suggests potential approaches for theory construction based on Chinese practices.
