Research on Spatial-temporal Characteristics and Optimization Strategy of Slow Speed Space of Walking Path after School of Primary School Students: A Case Study of Xi’an Old Urban District
Abstract:The walking paths used by primary school students for their daily commute represent one of the most commonly utilized spaces in their everyday lives of primary school students. However, these paths often suffer from a range of issues, including cramped spaces, low standards, poor facilities and insufficient safety, which necessitate optimization. Guided by the principles of constructing a child-friendly environment and aiming to enhance a safe, dynamic and healthy school commuting experience for primary school students, this study conducted a survey on the slow-speed walking spaces of the walking paths after school in four primary schools in the old urban district of Xi’an. By using the methods of GPS spatial and temporal tracking, GIS kernel density image analysis, behavior records and questionnaire surveys, the study summarized the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics and behavior patterns of these slow-speed spaces. Furthermore, the study analyzed the environmental factors influencing these spaces and proposed optimization principles and strategies for important node spaces, such as the school front area, sidewalks, road intersections, commercial outer spaces, pocket parks, and squares. These findings and recommendations are intended to provide valuable references for improving the environmental quality of school commuting spaces.
