Abstract:Through the case of the old Shanghai town, this research discusses the value and potential of“capillary”, the lane system within the urban blocks for the preservation and inheritance in the transformation of old city. Based on six cases from two rounds of diploma projects with different conditions, it analyzes the standpoint and design strategy to deal with the internal lanes system from a morphological and typological view, and discusses the influences of different strategies on the urban space. It clarifies that the protection of typological characteristics of the lane system is crucial for urban design strategies with the clue of“capillary”. The experiment shows that it is highly important to keep the structure, form, hierarchy and spatial scale of lanes. Based on this, the building types can be various, and it is the core to have a balance between the lanes and buildings in the design operation.
