Abstract:The absence of systematic cognition and operation based upon integration of components leads to some common problems, such as fragmentation, symbolization, artificialness, isolation, characterless and dehumanization, in the process of the making of urban riverscape. This paper sums up six components of urban riverscape as an integral system, which are spatial structure, landscape composition, transportation system, ecological environment, historical culture and social services. In virtue of a research framework consisting of these components, the paper analyzes the riverscape making of Charles River in Boston of the United States, revealing its characteristics including cohesion, authenticity, naturalness, accessibility, sociality and humanism, also as strategies in response to common problems. The paper further concludes that gradualism, publicness, differentiation and effectiveness of development and planning are major factors fundamental to the systematic making of urban riverscape.
