Abstract:As a large-scale urban event, China’s National Games have the capacity to integrate a vast array of resources within a short period of time and promote the construction of urban infrastructure. In the context of the new era, how to harmonize the relationship between China’s National Games venues and urban space, and respond to the growing demand for national fitness, has emerged as an urgent issue that needs to be addressed. This article reviews the main features and problems of China’s National Games venues, analyzes the development trends and design concepts for the 2025 National Games venues, and draws on case studies from North American cities as well as urban catalyst theory. It proposes a design strategy for National Games venues based on the urban catalyst perspective. The focus of National Games venues will shift from an emphasis on athletics and grand modeling to prioritizing public fitness and integrating venues with the urban fabric. The venues will function as urban catalysts, facilitating the re-design of urban functions and the re-organization of urban space by activating latent urban functions and aligning with urban design initiatives.
