Integration of Artisans and Multidimensional Representation: Teaching and Practice of Vernacular Architecture Surveying and Mapping in the Background of Art Schools
Abstract:China Academy of Art has consistently delved into indigenous architectural philosophies, resources, and artisanal traditions to establish an educational model centered on the “Philosopher-Artisan” ideal. The Rural Architectural Surveying and Mapping Course, while preserving the rigor of traditional surveying practices, emphasizes an artistic dimension rooted in the academy’s aesthetic framework, showcasing a pedagogy that integrates craftsmanship with artistic expression and multidimensional representation. This article traces the evolution and pedagogical reforms of the surveying curriculum at China Academy of Art, highlighting its structural framework of “Two Dimensions, Four Units, and Two Transformations.” The “Two Dimensions” combine “Surveying Integration/Separation” and “Craftsmanship-Art Fusion”; the “Four Units” comprise progressive modules—“Interpreting Vernacular Architecture,” “On-Site Precision Surveying,” “Incorporating Artisan Expertise,” and “Drawing-Based Representation”; while the “Two Transformations” involve converting practical outcomes into foundational design references for students and open-access data for heritage conservation. The course bridges theoretical inquiry, fieldwork, and artistic articulation, aiming to cultivate “Philosopher-Artisan” designers imbued with humanistic values and social responsibility.
