Abstract：The important difference between new vernacular architecture and the traditional one is the change of design and construction mode caused by labor division. Rather than restoration and preservation, new vernacular architecture design should use new tools to solve new problems between buildings, environment and users, based on the research about tradition. Based on the above thinking, we made a survey of traditional villages and dwellings in the southwestern Jiangxi, analyzed form patterns and spatial layout of traditional settlements and dwellings through the theory and software of space syntax. We then put forward that this method could serve as a tool to deal with the relationship between contemporary rural public building and its surroundings, to make the layout, space, circulation responsive to the environment and traditional culture.
