Abstract:This paper selects four cases of modern architecture located in Xiamen and Tsingtao, which were constructed from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century and around the 1930s. It delves into the engineering details in terms of construction process, construction technology, craftmanship and materials, etc. and traces the successive transformation in construction techniques as manifested in these cases. At the same time, it analyzes the relationship between technological strategies and the cultural preferences and social motivations underlying them, examining the manifestation of social modernity via evolving technology. Furthermore, it attempts to assess the profound value of modern architectural heritage in the construction dimension as the object of contemporary heritage conservation practice within a more extensive temporal and spatial context.
