Dim Light of Dawn: The Awkward Situation and the Way out of Modern Architectural Heritage Protection from the British-style Station Building of Puzhen Railway Station
Abstract:Large numbers of precious architectural heritages exist in Chinese cities that once opened to the world as commodity exchange centres during modern times. With the rapid development of modern cities and the adjustment of economy and urban structure, a large number of historical buildings lost their original functions and were gradually eliminated and replaced. This paper makes a study on the protection of the British-style station building of Puzhen Railway Station, a protected historic site in Nanjing, and its dilemma in urban development, discusses the awkward situation and the causes of the dilemma regarding
the protection of this century-old modern architectural heritage, and reveals the problems of architectural heritage in the urban development. This paper reflects how the connotation of heritage can be activated, how architectural heritage reuse can contribute to reshaping heritage properties, promoting the continuation, activation and regeneration of architectural heritage, and endowing new spirit of place, so as to re-integrate heritages into urban life.
