Abstract：Hubei Model Prison was founded by Zhang Zhidong in 1907 as the first Western-style reformed prison in Chinese early modern history. It comprehensively and systematically introduced foreign ideas and technologies in prison system, design and construction. Based on a large number of historical materials, this paper carries out historical research on Hubei Model Prison, analyzes and restores its architectural design from the aspects of planning layout, architectural space, architectural form and functional organization, and explores its important value as heritage. This paper fills the gap of the historical study of model prisons in the late Qing Dynasty, and proposes to protect the Hubei Model Prison immediately in order to keep its heritage integrity and authenticity.
