Abstract:Functional mix plays a key role in promoting urban spatial intensification and urban vitality, especially at the scale level of city blocks. The functional mixing measurement of city blocks can serve to understand and assess the functional layout of inventory space. This research adopts the mixed-use Index (MXI) to measure the block units in the old city area of Nanjing. By mapping in ArcGIS and a typological study of the measurements, it visually presents various types of functional mix with their distribution, reveals the correlations between the locations of different functional mixing types and the urban structure, and concludes the spatial pattern of functional mix. Also, it suggests the potential problems in the block units with a low functional mixing degree.
