Abstract:The Umekoji steam locomotive garage is the largest existing sector annular steam locomotive garage in Japan. This study summarizes the historical evolution of the Umekoji steam locomotive garage, including three periods: the construction phase, the operation phase, and the protection, activation and utilization phase. It then analyzes the architectural characteristics of the garage area, including site layout, functional space composition, architectural form and facade design, and structural system. The study subsequently elaborates on countermeasures for the protection, activation and utilization of the steam engine garage and its overall environment, focusing on two aspects: overall protection and structural reinforcement, and functional updates and spatial integration. On this basis, the study summarizes the heritage value embodied in its architectural features, and highlights the inspiration and reference value of this case study.
