Abstract:The Faculty of Architecture in Graz University of Technology has established a design studio for Master’s students, with a focus on large-span structural design. Students obtain a further understanding of the relationship between space, function, and structure, through applying structural analysis in the architectural design process, and in the meanwhile developing a design approach that integrates structure and architecture. This article describes the requirements and teaching process of the design studio, and discusses the features of the studio, its educational functions for future architects, and the applicability of this teaching approach for Chinese architectural education.
