Abstract:The built heritage in Japan is composed primarily of wooden architecture heritage. However, allowing for the characteristics of wooden architecture, Japan tends to take replacement and reconstruction as the main repair method, which makes the authenticity of its heritage preservation controversial. Based on the thorough analysis of the major conservation practices and literature during each historical stage of Japan, this paper briefly reviews the development and evolution of the preservation methods of Japanese wooden buildings. Focusing on the core concept of “authenticity” and further taking into account the cultural traits and realistic background of Japan, this paper summarizes four ever-unfading values of wooden heritage preservation in Japan, in order to respond to the rethinking of “authenticity” from the perspective of cultural relativism.
