Study on the Mechanisms of Residential Spatial Differentiation and Heritage Identity in Residential-type Historic Districts: A Case Study of Barkhor Street in Lhasa
Abstract:Against the dual background of urban renewal and cultural inheritance, the protection and development of residential historical blocks should prioritize the comprehensive balance between heritage conservation, community development, and heritage identity. Using a“socio-spatial”lens, this study examines the case of Barkhor Street in Lhasa City from the perspectives of living quality and heritage utilization, and then develops a regression model to examine the impact of living quarters on the heritage identity of residential historical and cultural districts. The study finds that: 1) Residents’heritage identities vary significantly depending on their living environment; 2) Key variables influencing residents’heritage identity include per capita dwelling area, housing ownership type, heritage distribution, and store form. Above all, per capita dwelling area and store form have the most intuitive influence on housing ownership type and heritage distribution; additional factors such as age, ethnicity, and average annual household income also exert a combined effect. The study suggests implementing a mixed housing model, which can improve the standard of residential buildings and facilitate community engagement.
