Exploring Contemporary Architectural Design Education Rooted in the Traditional Chinese Construction System: A Case Study of the Third-year Architectural Design Course at Tianjin University
Abstract:To address the current issue where Chinese architectural design education heavily relies on Euro-American design system and lacks integration between core design courses and history and theory courses, the School of Architecture at Tianjin University has restructured the third-year Architectural Design curriculum. It has established design projects that feature both comprehensive and thematic approaches with complementary and progressive content, adopting a “dual-threaded” strategy that interweaves historical knowledge with design methodologies, and conducting contemporary architectural design training based on traditional Chinese building prototypes. This pedagogical approach aims to establish a curriculum system that organically integrates design and history, while exploring a teaching model that inherits traditional Chinese construction theories and methods. This encourages students to build a cognitive framework of traditional wisdom, inspiring them to explore contemporary adaptation paths for traditional Chinese construction systems. This not only promotes cross-integration across courses but also provides new perspectives for architectural design education rooted in traditional Chinese construction systems.
