Abstract:With the case of the M1 of the Duan family tombs in Macun, Jishan, this paper explores the construction traditions of tombs of the wealthy commoner class in the southern Shanxi Province of Song and Jin Dynasties. Starting from the scale relationship and decorative motifs of the imitated wooden imagery on the surrounding walls, it analyzes the spatial intention and usage of the tomb chambers. By analyzing the specific masonry techniques of the base, column frames, bracket systems, and roof, it reveals the methods that craftsmen used to handle molded bricks. By drawing illustrations, this paper verifies that the entire tomb chamber has certain geometric composition rules, and retraces the thinking process of craftsmen using ruler and compass construction and aspect ratio to perfect their design plans
