Abstract:Current understanding of the concept“layering”in architecture comes from Colin Rowe and Robert Slutzky’s renowned book Transparency. For decades, “layering”has been viewed as an analysis method about the design result, instead of a design methodology. This article traces the idea of“layering”back to the discussions of‘layering and monolithic’prior to the emergence of modern architecture. Based on a series of case studies, the authors divide architectural practices intentionally applying the“layering”methods into three categories: the layering of perception and experience, the layering of diagrams and structures, and the layering of architectural knowledge system (AKS), to point out its“non-era”characteristics, and argue for the neglected theoretical value of“layering”as a design methodology and its challenge to contemporary architectural paradigm.
