Abstract:The development of the architecture discipline at Hu’nan University is nourished by the climate, geography, human environment, and residential settlements of Hu’nan. This paper is structured into three parts. Firstly, it conducts a review of the history and divides the study of vernacular residence at Hu’nan University and its related practices since the 1920s into four stages, namely, enlightenment, vernacular investigation, contemporary transformation, and multiple fusion, while summarizing the characteristics of the times in the study and architectural creation of vernacular residence at Hu’nan University. On this basis, this paper summarizes the diffusion of the residential research area, the promotion of the combination of residence and creation and the infusion of creative techniques into folk houses and other aspects of change. Finally, the work results of four typical teams are selected to showcase the current status of historical research, technical analysis, regional creation, and rural construction in the field of residential architecture. Through the above research, this paper presents a typical case and a typical experience in contemporary Chinese architectural education, and clarifies the significant importance of residential studies in contemporary Chinese regional architectural education.
