Abstract：Through the analysis of the research on Chinese traditional residence in the 1980s in the context of modern architecture discourses, the author points out that the research signified the evolution of modern architectural academics, while it also developed and was changed by the architecture discourses in China in the 1980s. Chinese traditional residence study aroused the recognition of the local expression of architecture, promoted the attention to the cultural and social characteristics of it, and paved the way for the settlement study to become a new research content of architectural research in the 1990s. Through the discussion about the interactions, the significance of the research on residences in architecture could be emphasized, and it could help architects broaden their view in order to enrich the understanding of traditional residential research.
