Abstract：On April 25, 1983, Zou Denong and Dou Yide interviewed the famous architect Chen Zhi. This article converts the recorded interview into a suitably concise text, and analyses the key issues in the interview. The interview mainly includes: groundbreaking Chinese architects and their works; tradition and innovation; national forms and local characteristics; individual creation, collective creation, executive will and so on. Chen Zhi was outspoken and pertinent on classic and authoritative architectural works from before and after the liberation to the early 1980s. He had a deep thinking and distinct position on the development and direction of Chinese architecture.
