Abstract:Craftsmen groups form the core of China’s traditional architectural craftsmanship lineage. Focusing on the construction processes across different Dong settlements in Hunan province, this study adopts a threefold methodology involving oral histories, on-site investigations, and physical surveys to cross-validate data. Through this approach, the study reconstructs the knowledge system of craftsmen groups’ construction practices, which is delineated into three main components: construction prototypes, ink theories, and craftsmen skills. A comparative analysis of these components is conducted to highlight both similarities and differences, while elucidating the underlying reasons for such disparities. The aim is to reveal the distinguishing factors within the craftsmanship lineage of Dong settlements within a multicultural context.
