Abstract:Situated along the southeastern coast of China, Fujian Province exhibits a diverse array of traditional dwellings and settlements shaped by its distinctive combination of mountainous terrain and maritime influences. Notably, scholars at the School of Architecture, Huaqiao University, under the leadership of pioneers such as Fang Yong and Guan Ruiming, have both inherited and expanded on a rich academic tradition in the study of traditional dwellings and settlements. This paper undertakes a retrospective and evaluative examination of the evolution of research in this field over the past four decades. It primarily delves into investigations and surveys on various dwelling typologies, explores the human habitat within these settlements, and meticulously documents construction techniques. Additionally, this paper provides an outlook on the necessity of collaborative research on overseas Chinese settlements from the perspective of the overseas communication of Chinese culture.
