Disassembly for Repair: Case Study of a Timber Granary and Bouyei Construction Techniques in Yaogu Village, Qiannan Bouyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture
Abstract:Repair by disassembly is a systematic repair and conservation methodology developed from the restoration works of traditional wooden buildings in Japan. It signifies the complete dismantling of a wooden structure, the repair or replacements of damaged components, and the subsequent reassembly. In the practical restoration of a timber granary with racks in Yaogu village, south of Guizhou province, repair by disassembly is applied. Through the typology and participant-observation in field investigations, this paper illustrates the built form and structural system, and studies the architectonic logic, working procedure and components state of the timber granary. Indigenous assembly marks and tools used by local carpenters are also analyzed for a better understanding of the construction process. The outcome aims to present the characteristics of vernacular construction techniques used by Bouyei ethnic craftsmen and transmit them to meet the construction needs under the constraints of the mountainous environment.
