Abstract:In the industrial regeneration from the “Rust Belt to Showy Belt” of the Yangpu Riverfront, the visual acted as a medium, and through the combination of industrial ruins with the contemporary art and consumer culture, place making valued drosscapes and brought in a new imagery economy. However, the practices of hinterland residents, ruin explorers, and architects in abandoned factories presented an alternative perspective to the dominant spectacle narrative, one that was more dynamic, process-oriented, and socio-economically renewing. This article explores how “interventions” in drosscapes should unfold as they evolve into public spaces or public buildings, and regain their public nature.
