Abstract:The Regulatory Detailed Planning, as a representative of a series of planning codes shaping the urban form, is the major instrument for China’s planning agencies to balance the interests of capital, society and the state. However, it remains unclear how the planning codes guide the urban form in a specific scenario. Through mapping, collaging and story-telling, the “Code City” studio critiques the existing planning practice in China and explores alternative morphological scenarios based on exhaustive manipulation of the code and regulation. The objective of this design research studio is to show the internal paradox of China’s planning system and demonstrate alternative city futures when the code is manipulated, compromised or deciphered.
