Abstract:Public space revitalization is a significant and ongoing topic in architecture and urban planning. For a long time, the revitalization of public space led by architects and urban designers has tended to transform open space from the topographic perspective, paying less attention to the larger social and political dimension beyond the physical aspect. Based on the theoretical framework of topographic and procedural approaches in public space research, this article examines the renewal of public space in Hong Kong through the case of the Magic Carpet project in Sai Ying Pun. The topographic and procedural approaches jointly shape the implementation of the project by placing the public and public life at the core, which aims to enrich the people-centered renewal of public space.
