Abstract:Peter Salter’s Four Houses in Notting Hill, London were recently completed after ten years of work. In the 1980s and 90s, Salter was a contemporary of a group of avantgarde architects, such as Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, and Zaha Hadid who studied or taught at the Architectural Association, London. However, as a later labelled deconstructivists who became well-known after gaining important commissions, Salter did not enjoy similar success and redoubled his efforts in architectural education. The Four Houses project was a belated manifesto. It was a major project built after Salter’s practice in Japan in the 1990s. His design research and pedagogy did not revolve around theory and abstract concepts, but instead concrete forms and tectonics instilled with a strong sense of place, a spirit of craftsmanship and bedazzling artistic creativity. The project rejected generality and consistency, which modern architecture often strived for, and instead offered the particular, the diverse, and even the eccentric qualities. This singular creation has generated a lot of interest in the United Kingdom and beyond.
