Abstract:A monument is one of the oldest and most important concepts and objects in the field of Western heritage, exerting a profound impact on modern heritage conservation both internationally and domestically. Since the 17th century, the pursuit of architectural form and artistic value has become its core characteristic and concept, and images have been an important means of its development and dissemination. Drawing on the development and characteristics of Western monument imagery, this paper investigates the historical process of the integration of monument images into China, from“Seven Wonders and the Colosseum”painting in Nan Huairen’s“Kunyu Tushuo”to the image schema of the city gate tower, the pagoda, the palace and the paifang, and finally to the localization of such imagery. It also reveals the evolution of heritage concepts: from a focus on artistic value to the equal emphasis on both artistic and historical value, based on the development and characteristics of the monument images in the West, by the perspective of images, including architectural surveying drawing, landscape painting, photography photos and other images. It then explores the impact of the concept of Western monument in terms of image characteristics, objects and ideas on the modern Chinese heritage conservation, such as the separating out of the conception of single building, and the elevated importance of architectural form and artistic value in heritage evaluation.
