Abstract:Since the rapid development of information technology has significantly affected daily life and driven society into the new technology civilization, libraries have been firstly affected and changed as a place for information exchange; including the traditional library buildings designed for paper or hardcopy media. In view of the challenges of the impact of digital technology, the changes arising from human behavior and utilization demand, the increases in environment quality improvement, and the constraints from building energy-saving and carbon emission reduction requirements, this paper discusses the dialectical relationship among architectural function, building performance and architectural form. Based on a hierarchical relationship of function as a prerequisite, performance as a purpose and form as a result, it proposes a design strategy to comply with the development from function composition, space organizing, and space performance, so as to establish the basic principles of “form follows function” “function equals performance” and “form follows performance” to support library building design in the new era.
