Research on Facadism Conservation and Utilization of Historic Environment in the United States under the Background of Urban Redevelopment: A Case Study of Washington D.C.
Abstract:Characterized by the separation of facade and interior space, facadism emerged with the real estate development oriented urban redevelopment in the United States at the end of the 1970s, and took on a more flexible mode after the 1990s. This article puts facadism under the background of urban redevelopment and makes an in-depth study on the development of facadism in the field of historic environment conservation and utilization in the United States. By examining the transformation of urban redevelopment mode after the World War II, it explains the political and economic background of facadism. Through the post-modern turn of architecture, urban planning and heritage conservation, it illustrates its theoretical foundation. Through the gambling process among different institutions in Washington D.C., it studies its formation mechanism. Through the loss of material space and social culture, it also explaines its consequences. On this basis, this article calls for the conservation of real material and intangible historical heritage in urban redevelopment.
