From Micro-scale Design to Macro-scale Energy Efficiency: Exploring Adaptive Integration Strategies for Air Conditioning Equipments on Urban Building Facades
Abstract:Urban building facades are widely covered by outdoor air-conditioning units, causing disorder in urban aesthetics and high energy consumption. This paper reviews the history of air-conditioning equipment integration into buildings and its theoretical background. It then reveals the connection between the micro-scale design of outdoor units and urban macro-level energy consumption and aesthetics order from both social and technical perspectives. An analysis of the contradiction between current uniform measures and the complexity of this phenomenon reveals that designing facades with integrated air-conditioning units requires considering climate, economy, history, operation and maintenance, and building types, as well as adopting open and adaptive guidelines. In future design and urban renewal, building technology, spatial design, and public participation should cooperate under open guidelines to optimize the impact of air-conditioning units on urban aesthetics and energy efficiency.
