Abstract：This article took the case of the historic centre of Palermo as an example, introduced the background, content and methodology of Detailed Executive Plan (DEP) which had been approved and implemented since 1993, and analysed a multiple Italian approach to urban heritage preservation. DEP used urban morphology and building typology as major drivers of a preservation planning, and regulated eight types of interventions as detailed guidelines for order the operation of the preservation work. Furthermore, all the interventions were carried out in four categories divided in term of the different economic contributor. DEP was a rigid regulation. It has made a big contribution to the preservation of the historic centre of Palermo while there are negative aspects as well as the positive ones during the process of the work. In the changing world today, it will face new challenges during being implemented.
