Abstract:The realization of“active ageing”is a new challenge for China’s ageing problem, and open spaces in settlements, as the main venue for physical activities for most elderly people, are the focus of construction to realize active ageing. Six settlements in Fengcheng County, Jiangxi Province were selected as samples, and the characteristics of public facilities and physical activities of the elderly in the open space of the settlements were studied through field survey and behavioural notation method. The results show that: the green environment, the public facilities, and the form, accessibility and enclosure of open space units are the key factors affecting the physical activity of the elderly. Based on the results of the study, the following recommendations are made: 1) to increase the green space ratio and control the vegetation coverage in the residential area, and to increase the number of public facilities; 2) to optimise the accessibility and enclosure of each spatial unit, as well as the enclosure form of public facilities, according to the different physical activity characteristics of the elderly. This study provides a theoretical basis and strategic reference for the planning and design of open spaces and public facilities for the elderly in residential areas.
