Abstract:Danmaku (bullet comments), as a means for social media users to engage deeply in online interactions, embodies multimedia characteristics such as flow and coverage, performance and viewing, and text-image intertextuality. From the perspective of medium theory, the study of danmaku focuses on how the dynamic changes of media influence users’ viewing behavior through transforming the situational atmospheres. Based on this, this article attempts to introduce the concept of “urban danmaku” into the study of public spaces, and conducts a typological analysis of its aesthetic representations and production mechanisms from both temporal and spatial dimensions. Through field observation, the study empirically analyzes urban danmaku in the immediate surroundings. After classifying and analyzing urban danmaku produced under conditions of both uniform planning and organic growth, the research finds that urban danmaku, as a pragmatic symbol, is closely associated with usage scenarios, spatial functions, and target groups. Its common and individual representations not only reflect the result of businesses’ aesthetic preferences and shops’ commercial atmospheres, but also serve as a comprehensive projection of social strata and cultural capital. Finally, from the perspective of medium theory, the study concludes that urban danmaku, as a mobile medium, has the potential to stimulate the temporary use of urban public spaces, aiming to establish it as a novel perspective for urban renewal intervention.
