Abstract:The stress of living in large cities and the alienation from nature increase the mental burden of the youth, which in turn affects their mental health. In urban regeneration, it is important to optimize small green spaces to enhance the daily experience of the youth and promote their mental health and well-being. In this study, we analyzed the perceived restoration benefits of 12 small green spaces of different scales (ranging from 10m×10m to 40m×40m) and types (water, lawn, and plaza) using photo simulation and PRS-11 scale. A total of 627 valid samples were collected, which indicated that the restoration benefits of the larger scales of water (30 m×30 m, 40 m×40 m) and lawn (40 m×40 m) were significant. Regarding the scale, the restoration benefits of the larger scales (30 m×30 m, 40 m×40 m) were notable; in terms of the type, the restoration benefits of the lawn were the best, followed by the water and the plaza. The water surface had a high sense of remoteness and fascination, and the youth who had a childhood in countryside or are male experienced a greater perceived restoration. The study provides empirical evidence for the renewal of small green spaces and could promote the development of a healthy city that offers more perceived restoration benefits for the youth.
