Abstract:This article is an extract from the introduction part of The History of Modern Chinese Architecture , one of the Key Books in China’ s theTwelfth National Plan. From the perspective of the relationship between the state and building activities, it delineates the development of Chinese architecture since the 1840s from a profession dominated by the state rule and standards for hierarchical control to an industry that followed the law of markets. With the formation of the new nation state during the republican period, Chinese government reformulated its relationship with architecture through legislations, education, and promoting historical study and Chinese-style design. This change thus stands for the key issue in the study of this history.
