Abstract:This paper examines the origin and development of the vernacular architectural research in Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU), aiming to clarify its academic context. The research team of SWJTU carried forward the on-site investigation tradition of the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture (SRICA), re-visited the vernacular buildings in Sichuan that had been investigated by the SRICA, and assimilated the investigation approaches of the SRICA. Concentrating on the underlying logic of Sichuan vernacular architecture and settlements, the SWJTU team conducted in-depth studies on the scattered individual houses and market town settlements in the Han area of Sichuan and Chongqing, as well as the defensive settlements in multi-ethnic areas. Professor Ji Fuzheng also incorporated“painting”and“personality”into the research, highlighting aesthetic appeal and subjective experience. At the level of heritage preservation, the team proposes some operational strategies for the future conservation and utilization of vernacular dwellings.
