Abstract:The natural environment of high mountains, hills, and valleys crisscrossing the southwestern region, along with the social and cultural environment of diverse ethnic coexistence, has shaped the distinctive appearance of dwellings in the southwest. For a century, several generations of architectural historians have delved into this field to gain a comprehensive understanding of its construction system. This article takes the successful organization of the “Exhibition on Traditional Chinese Dwellings: Research on Traditional Dwelling Forms” and academic seminars as an opportunity, and starting with the research achievements on southwestern dwellings pioneered by Prof. Liang Sicheng and the Chinese Society of Architectural History. It traces the research path and achievements of Southwestern dwellings, mainly led by Chongqing University, through three stages: inception and foundation, inheritance and development, and multidimensional and diverse, paying tribute to the 90 years of hard work and progress of previous scholars.
