Abstract:The significant impact of the Graduate Center of Architecture at Peking University(2000-2009)on contemporary Chinese architectural education, supervised by Yung Ho Chang, is commonly acknowledged in academia. It exerts influence on society through innovative course organization, a diverse faculty, an autonomy-oriented syllabus, and the multi-medium communication of studio works. However, research on architectural education is absent in summarizing the core standpoint and concepts of the educational methods employed at the Center. This study reviews Stanford Anderson’s definition of the interaction between the “conceptual program” and the “artifact program,” and questions the fundamental historical attitude, disciplinary autonomy, and teaching organization of the experimental educational program at the Center. It particularly attempts to re-examine the key literature and facts from the decade around the establishment of the Center to assess its intellectual legacy and historical status.
